Sending a clear message at the beginning can not only save you time on back and forth messages, but also communicate more than the generic “Hi, I’m interested in your space. When can I come see it?” message.

To begin, you don’t want to assume that the other person is ready to say yes and invite you over to their home before they know whether theres a chance of incompatibility. Here are some tips for writing messages that speed up the process and let the other person know whether or not this might be a compatible fit.

Keep in mind, you want to keep your messages to 1-2 paragraphs max and not overwhelm the other person with a lot to read.

Reaching out to a host:

Introduce yourself! Let them know what you do and what you’re about. Vocation, hobbies, free-time activities, social life and general lifestyle. Basically you want to paint a picture of what it would be like to live with you. Also let them know what you’re up to and what you’re looking for at this stage in your life – (And be honest! This isn’t about trying to move in or get “accepted”, this is about finding compatibility!)

Let them know what it is about their space that caught your attention and why you think it would be a good fit for both of you.

And feel free to ask any questions!

Reaching out to a potential roommate:

Introduce yourself and let them know why you and your home might be compatible. Let them know a bit about yourself and send them a link to your listing.

If they are interested, then proceed to get to know more about each other and see if you’re compatible.

And voila! This should help you move through the beginning a little more swiftly.
