Responding to Roommate Ad – How to Stand Out!
Posted on: September 16th, 2022 by Jen No Comments

Have you responded to a roommate ad and then heard nothing back? Sending a clear message at the beginning can create more interest and get you a faster response.

Let’s start with etiquette. To begin, you don’t want to assume that the other person is ready to say yes and invite you over to their home. They want to see a change of compatibility before they let you know where they live and what’s in their home.

Here are some tips for writing messages let the other person know whether or not this might be a compatible fit.

Keep in mind, you want to keep your messages to 1-2 paragraphs max and not overwhelm the other person with a lot to read; Consequently, too much text is a red flag.

Reaching out to a host:

Introduce yourself! Let them know what you do and what you’re about. What is your vocation, your hobbies, free-time activities, social life, and general lifestyle. Paint a picture of what it would be like to live with you. Also, let them know what you’re up to and what you’re looking for at this stage in your life (And be honest! This isn’t about trying to move in or get “accepted”; it’s about finding compatibility!)

Let them know what it is about their space that caught your attention and why you think it would be a good fit for both of you.

And feel free to ask any questions! This let’s know that you are also looking for compatibility.

Reaching out to a potential roommate:

Introduce yourself and let them know why you and your home might be compatible. Share a bit about yourself and send them a link to your listing.

If they are interested, then proceed to get to know more about each other and see if you’re compatible.

And voila! This should help you move through the beginning a little more swiftly.
